A report released this week by the World Health Organization says that some six million deaths are caused by tobacco products every year, which the report says also cost the world one trillion U.S. dollars in annual healthcare spending and lost productivity.
This far surpasses the global revenue made from taxes on tobacco, estimated at some 269 billion dollars from 2013 to 2014.
The report found that tobacco control measures are particularly weak in low- and middle-income countries, where roughly 80 percent of the world's 1.1 billion smokers reside.

If action is not taken, the report says the economic costs will soar, as will the number of deaths, which could jump to 8 million a year by 2030.
The official recommended tax and price increases, bans on tobacco marketing as well as smoke-free policies and pictorial warnings for smokers.
The report found that if all countries raised their taxes by 80 cents a pack, roughly 140-billion dollars could be generated globally, which could contribute to government funding for anti-smoking campaigns and smoking cessation programs.
