Watchers say the softer tone could possibly mark a change in Beijing's stance.

That's how an op-ed in China's state-run Global Times described China's retaliatory measures against South Korea's largest retail group Lotte.
The paper, considered a mouthpiece of the Chinese government, said the sanctions imposed on Lotte will hurt the Chinese economy as well because South Korea and China are "inextricably interconnected."
It noted that Lotte has invested massively in China and that its ongoing businesses offer a lot of employment opportunities.
Currently, Lotte runs 120 supermarkets, shopping malls and department stores in China, each of which employs about 700 locals.
And Lotte's construction of a theme park in the northeastern province of Shenyang is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs.
The Global Times report follows recent criticism of Lotte by other Chinese state-run outlets -- Huanqiu Shibao and Xinhua News Agency -- for the company supplying the land for South Korea to station U.S. missile defense system THAAD.
Their message was that if Lotte doesn't change course it will see its sales decline and will ultimately have to leave China.
Since last September when it decided to offer the land for THAAD, Lotte's business units in China have faced tight inspections of their taxes and building projects.
In November, Chinese authorities halted the building of a Lotte theme park in Shenyang, citing what they called "errors" in construction.
